Don Demers
Seeing and Interpreting the Landscape
Oil
September 18-23, 2012
Red Rock Ranch, Westcliffe Colorado
This course deals with seeing and artistically interpreting the landscape
First we must learn to see the land and then portray it through an artistic understanding of it. Through a series of exercises from developing a concept and quickly creating some thumbnail compositions, all the way through to painting techniques that will help us to create the idea that we have in the first place. In other words we will examine how to construct a landscape painting.
This will involve quick drawing, the study of values through monochromatic paintings and color exercises to determine both accurate color rendering and color relativity, visual narrative through the study of edges and line and finally painting techniques and tools.
This course is aimed at intermediate and advanced painters that have spent some time painting outdoors on location. Some days may be extended hours in order to accomplish our goals and have good painting time. Prepare to work hard and also enjoy and have fun with the process.
