Landscape painting presents many challenges for the artist. One way of dealing with these challenges is to utilize the time-tested "tools" of composition: The Principals of Design, and the Elements of Artistic Expression.
In this class the students will become familiar with these "tools" by my "Workshop Notes", lectures, demonstrations, and individual and group critiques.
We must learn to organize and simplify our approach to the subject, this is achieved by preliminary thumbnail sketches. In the thumbnail sketch we reduce the subject to a few simple shapes and values. Part of this process of simplifying is conceptualizing our idea, or that spark of inspiration that motivates us to paint a scene.
By working with a concept we immediately start to think in artistic terms, and this is our goal. It is through conceptualization that we bring our individuality to the painting process. And by organizing the scene we can move more quickly through the painting, making it easier to capture that which inspired us to paint it in the first place.
